Netflix has shared the first images from The Body, a new eight-episode series that mixes Catholic horror, teenage psychodrama, and a whole lot of bad behavior.
The series will premiere on Netflix November 11.
Created by Quinn Shephard, the writer-director behind the Emmy-nominated mystery Under the Bridge, The Body follows a group of Catholic school girls whose dance-team initiation goes horribly wrong. In the aftermath, the girls begin experiencing prophetic visions that ignite mass hysteria throughout their town.
Shephard serves as showrunner and will direct the premiere.
“I’ve always been interested in the idea of girlhood as a religious experience,” Shephard told Netflix. “This story is definitely my way of putting a playful spin on all the nightmares of my own teenage-dom.”
And she has a pretty great description for exactly what we’re getting.
“Tonally, I would describe the show as gritty camp,” Shephard explains. “It’s a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror.”
Shephard also describes The Body as a love letter to the ’90s and Y2K teen movies and erotic thrillers she grew up loving, specifically citing Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures, and even Mean Girls as inspirations. Her teenage fascination with The Crucible and the Salem witch trials also worked its way into the series.

Shephard promises plenty of cliffhangers and “a spooky sense of mounting dread,” which sounds like exactly the kind of Catholic school experience we’re looking for.
