Blumhouse and Cheetos Want to Scare the Feeling Out of Your Mouth With New Horror Puffs

What does fear taste like? Apparently cinnamon, spice, and the slow loss of feeling in your mouth.

Cheetos has officially teamed with Blumhouse for the Halloween season to launch Cheetos Sweet Phantom Heat flavored Puffs, a new limited-edition snack appropriately being dubbed “The Flavor of Fear.”

And these aren’t just Flamin’ Hot Cheetos with spooky packaging.

According to Delish, who got an early taste of the new flavor, the puffs start out with a sweet cinnamon sugar flavor before the heat slowly begins to creep in. Even stranger, they’re designed to create tingling, fizzing, and numbing sensations in your mouth, with the experience becoming more intense the more you eat. The effect was inspired by compounds found in Sichuan pepper.

So, yeah, Blumhouse is apparently making our Cheetos haunted now.

The partnership itself has been officially confirmed by Cheetos and Blumhouse, who tease that they’re bringing “flavor and fear together in an unexpected new way.” Even more interesting, the companies say “the mischief is just getting started,” promising additional surprises from the collaboration that have yet to be revealed.

As for when you can actually destroy your taste buds, Mashed reports that Cheetos sent out advance samples ahead of a nationwide August 31 release, with Sweet Phantom Heat available in 2.5-ounce and 8-ounce bags. Their taste test also confirms that the flavor begins with brown sugar and cinnamon before the serious heat arrives.
