Linda Cardellini is about to become a major part of Friday the 13th history as Pamela Voorhees in Peacock and A24’s upcoming Crystal Lake, but her relationship with the franchise goes back more than two decades.
Speaking with Variety, Cardellini recalled seeing Freddy vs. Jason in a packed theater at Universal CityWalk back in 2003, and it sounds like exactly the way that movie was meant to be experienced.
“I remember one of my most fun moviegoing experiences was I saw Freddy vs. Jason on the Universal City Walk, which is a giant movie theater, at the height of its popularity, and people were screaming at the screen and throwing things,” Cardellini told Variety.
Now she’s on the other side of the screen, playing Pamela Voorhees in Crystal Lake, and apparently things got pretty fucking messy.
“It does get gory, yes, so much so that I wish sometimes they weren’t as practical as they were,” Cardellini told Variety. “There’s a couple of gory moments on set that were very practical that were pretty gross. Blood everywhere at one point.”
That’s certainly music to my ears.
Cardellini also pointed out that horror roles traditionally put her on the opposite side of the knife. This time, she gets to be the one doing the chasing.
“Everything that I’ve ever read that was handed to me that was in that space was for the person who was being chased, not the person who was chasing everyone,” she explained. “It was really fun this time to be on the other side of the knife.”
Created and showrun by Brad Caleb Kane, Crystal Lake takes place after the drowning of young Jason Voorhees and follows Pamela’s descent toward the woman we eventually meet in the original . plays young Jason.
