‘Beyond the Horizon of Madness’ Documentary Celebrates Sam Neill’s Greatest Horror Movies

Just over a month after the heartbreaking death of Sam Neill, a new documentary is looking back at two of the actor’s most beloved contributions to horror cinema.

Arrow in the Head has revealed the trailer and artwork for Beyond the Horizon of Madness: The Horrors of Sam Neill, a new documentary from Mike Gencarelli centered on John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness and Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon.

Neill, who died July 13 at the age of 78, left behind an incredible genre legacy that stretched from playing the adult Damien Thorn in Omen III: The Final Conflict and starring opposite Isabelle Adjani in Possession to Dead Calm, In the Mouth of Madness and the sci-fi horror cult classic Event Horizon. And, of course, there’s a little movie called Jurassic Park, which remains one of the most breathlessly exhilarating theatrical experiences of my lifetime.

In the Mouth of Madness is particularly special to me. It’s easily one of my top three horror movies of all time, with Neill giving an absolutely perfect performance as John Trent while Carpenter slowly dismantles reality around him.

Then there’s Event Horizon, a movie whose legend has only grown over the decades. Anderson famously shot significantly more extreme material that was removed before release, but much of that footage was subsequently lost or deteriorated, making the long-dreamed-of complete version increasingly unlikely to ever exist.
