Well, this should make Resident Evil fans happy.
Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil has officially received its MPA rating, and Sony’s new adaptation of the iconic survival horror video game franchise is absolutely not pulling its punches.
The MPA has rated Resident Evil R for “strong bloody violence, gore and language throughout.”
Perfect.
Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons, has repeatedly stressed that his movie is attempting to capture the actual experience of playing a Resident Evil game rather than simply retelling one of them. As we’ve been covering extensively here at Dread, that includes everything from green herbs and typewriters to infected dogs, Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City, and even sequences filmed from a first-person perspective
The all-new story follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in a nonstop race for survival as one horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.
And considering the trailers have already teased gallons of blood, infected humans, grotesque creatures, and bodies literally raining from buildings, “strong bloody violence” and “gore” sounds just about right.
Resident Evil infects theaters and IMAX on September 18, 2026.
But that’s not the only upcoming horror movie getting slapped with an R rating this week.
Alex Goyette’s wonderfully fucked-up Breeder has also officially been rated R, and its description might be even more enticing:
“Disturbing material, violence/bloody images, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language.”
The film follows an eccentric poodle breeder who lures a broke college student to her remote ranch with the promise of research funding, only for him to discover that her offer comes with one seriously disturbing catch. , , , and star.
