‘Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom’ Trailer Goes Full ‘Frankenstein’ With Some Slasher Easter Eggs

The full trailer has arrived for Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, and this thing is going surprisingly hard on the horror references.

As we reported here at Dread Central last month, the upcoming stop-motion family movie is built around Halloween and plays heavily with the horror genre. The official setup has Shaun turning “mad scientist” after the Farmer destroys the flock’s beloved pumpkin patch, only for things to spiral out of control as the Farmer disappears and a mysterious beast begins roaming the woods of Mossingham. 

But the new trailer makes it even clearer just how much Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is baked into the movie. From the mad science and laboratory imagery to the creation itself, this looks like Aardman having a whole lot of fun introducing younger audiences to one of horror’s foundational monsters.

And Frankenstein isn’t the only horror touchstone getting some love.

Keep an eye on the rapid-fire montage and you’ll spot some very familiar slasher iconography, including a chainsaw and a hockey mask that immediately bring The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Friday the 13th to mind. Previous footage has even worked in a playful homage to Psycho, so the horror Easter eggs appear to be coming fast and furious. 

That makes The Beast of Mossy Bottom a pretty great gateway horror movie for those of us with kids who aren’t quite ready to meet Leatherface or Jason Voorhees just yet.

The Shaun the Sheep movies are typically a whole lot of fun anyway, and injecting all of this classic horror imagery into Aardman’s wonderfully tactile stop-motion world feels like a perfect fit.
