I joked yesterday that it was apparently Resident Evil week here at Dread Central, and sure enough, it continues.
Sony Pictures has gone full-on press blitz with Zach Cregger’s upcoming video game adaptation, which doesn’t even hit theaters until September 18. They’re promoting this thing hard and heavy right now, which certainly suggests they’re feeling pretty confident about what they have.
And hopefully audiences are responding, because it would be great to see Resident Evil revitalized as a fresh theatrical franchise.
As much as I enjoyed the Paul W.S. Anderson saga, six movies ultimately kept Resident Evil confined to that increasingly over-the-top sci-fi action space. Cregger has been very clear that he wants to bring the franchise back to hardcore survival horror, describing Resident Evil itself as “the flagship for survival horror.”
That makes this a very welcome return to Raccoon City.
But I digress.
Sony has dropped another brand new TV spot featuring a flicker of footage we’ve already seen along with a great new sequence at the end that delivers one hell of a scare. I won’t spoil it here, because the payoff is the fun part.
It’s apparently 'RESIDENT EVIL' week.

Quite frankly, everything I’ve seen from Resident Evil looks fantastic. I’m incredibly excited about this one.
Cregger has explained that rather than directly adapting one particular game, he’s attempting to recreate the actual experience of playing . That means locked areas, increasingly powerful weapons, healing sprays, green herbs, typewriters and even sequences shot from a first-person perspective.
