‘Cannibal Holocaust’ Gets a Gorgeous 4K Restoration — And Yes, You Can Watch It *Without* the Real Animal Cruelty

Horror fans are always chasing the uncut version.

We want more blood, more gore, the footage that was banned, censored, trimmed, lost or deemed too extreme for audiences. But there’s one movie where I’ve never had any desire to see everything.

That would be Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust.

Grindhouse Releasing has officially opened preorders for its massive Cannibal Holocaust UHD Ultimate Edition, a six-disc collector’s set built around a brand new 4K restoration sourced from the original 35mm and 16mm camera negatives!

And despite this being billed as the definitive, uncensored presentation of one of the most controversial horror movies ever made, I can also confirm that the new UHD includes an Animal Cruelty Free viewing option, just as Grindhouse’s previous Blu-ray and DVD releases did.

I absolutely love this.

If you’ve somehow avoided Cannibal Holocaust all these years, the controversy surrounding the movie isn’t simply because its fictional violence looks incredibly convincing. Animals were actually killed during the production, and their deaths appear on screen.

It remains one of the most uncomfortable aspects of the movie and something that, especially in 2026, many of us have absolutely no interest in revisiting.

Which is what makes the Animal Cruelty Free option such a smart inclusion.

As horror fans, we’re so accustomed to searching for the nastiest and most complete version of a movie that we rarely stop to consider the opposite. There are plenty of people who want to experience Cannibal Holocaust without watching actual animals suffer, and allowing viewers to remove that material without otherwise sanitizing the movie is kind of genius.

Outside of that option, Grindhouse has gone completely insane with this release.
