Adam Wingard and Adria Arjona Tease Future Crossovers with Her ‘Onslaught’ Character: “There’s More to Do”

This weekend, Adam Wingard‘s Onslaught roars into theaters like a bat out of hell. The filmmaker’s return to the universe of You’re Next and The Guest, Onslaught is like the weird, fucked up cousin of the former flicks. It’s an excessive, absurd, violent reflection of American rage that has a whole lot of fun with the topic (read my review).

At the center of Wingard and scribe Simon Barrett‘s tale of a trio of super soldiers unleashed on a desert trailer park is star Adria Arjona as Celeste. A military vet suffering from PTSD and struggling with motherhood, she’s the badass core of a film that pays homage to the legacy of tough-as-nails ’80s heroes that came before her. Think Sarah Connor, Ripley, or even Snake Plissken, who Wingard references while describing the character. Arjona proves more than up for the role with an engaging performance that had me cackling at how she consistently makes the villains appear small.

There’s been a lot of speculation about whether Wingard or Arjona will return for more stories set in the universe of The Guest. The pair recently sat down with Dread and teased that that could very well be the case.

When asked if we could see more films set in the universe, Wingard replied with a grin, “Yeah. There’s some Easter eggs in the end credits that people can kind of dig into, and it gives a little hint of it.“

Could that mean more of Celeste? “Yeah. I remember the last day of shooting for Adria was at the gas station. She’d been wearing that eye patch that’s probably done irreparable harm to one of her eyes. So, we took that eye patch out at the end of the shoot and burned it in the parking lot. It was like a little effigy. And I remember one of the last things you [Arjona] said to me is, ‘You know, I just don’t feel like we’re done with Celeste. I feel like there’s more to do’. Hopefully the stars all align because I’d love to see the character end up in a film with some of my other favorites that I’ve worked with and created over the years. So we’ll see.“
