Welcome to Dread Central Presents Terror on Tubi. Every month, I’ll be your horror curator, spotlighting a themed list of some of the best, freshest horror titles currently available to stream on the platform. This month, I want to get alliterative with some September slashers.
Below, you’ll find my picks for five slasher titles across the decades you need to plunge a knife into. They’re classic, they’re frightening, and they’re ready to slice and dice through September. Check them out.
Someone’s Watching Me
John Carpenter filmed Someone’s Watching Me, a made-for-television slasher movie, right before he helmed Halloween. We all know how that movie went. Resultantly, Someone’s Watching Me has lived in the shadow of Michael Myers for decades, but the same strengths that rendered Halloween such a classic are present here. Carpenter imbues the proceedings with suffocating tension, progressive politics, and directs one hell of a performance from star Lauren Hutton.
And, much like Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me is an excellent gateway slasher. There’s nary a drop of blood (it was a TV movie, after all), so in lieu of visceral violence, Carpenter goes full Hitchcockian. There’s one beat where Hutton’s lead hides out in her apartment’s basement that will have your palms sweating and your heart racing. Better stock up on some electrolytes.
Rob Zombie’s Halloween II
Rob Zombie’s is a masterpiece. Love it or hate it, his take on Carpenter’s original, with his first , still largely followed the beat-for-beat momentum we saw in 1978. Here, Zombie flips the script. While ostensibly a remake of , Zombie crams that entire ordeal into the first ten minutes, instead thrusting us forward a year for an all-out Gothic Hillbilly feast for the senses.
