‘Resident Evil’: Watch Three Insanely Gory Minutes of Zombie Carnage! [Clip]

There’s nothing more irritating than when a studio promotes a movie with bland, generic and benign imagery and clips ahead of its release, overprotecting the product like they’re saving us from some sort of spoilers at the expense of any actual excitement behind the film.

Fortunately for us, Sony Pictures is on a full-blown PR blitz for Resident Evil, which hits theaters in just a few weeks.

It started last week with a flurry of new images, vignettes, behind-the-scenes clips, little tidbits of footage, and interviews with director Zach Cregger, culminating in 30 minutes of the film being shown to fans in Los Angeles, Dallas, and New York, followed by a live Reddit AMA with Cregger. The reactions coming out of those screenings have been pretty fucking wild.

The hype is unbelievable right now.

Sony is wasting no time building on it, dropping a full-blown three-minute clip from the film that expands on one of the sequences glimpsed in the trailer where zombies are seemingly falling out of the sky. Now we have the context, and the footage is unimaginably gory, thrilling and sets the tone perfectly.

Bryan (Austin Abrams), carrying the organ transplant carrier that is also being turned into a popcorn bag at movie theaters when this hits theaters, begins running down a road as a zombie screams from above and leaps down to attack him. It hits the ground and fucking explodes on impact.

Bryan takes off running as he realizes the rooftops are completely filled with zombies screaming at him. They begin leaping after him, smashing into the road, landing on cars and exploding all around him as he runs for his life.

When Bryan finally reaches the end of the road, he turns around and realizes they’re all dead.

It’s a big moment for both Bryan and the viewer, who are learning the rules of this new apocalypse in real time. More importantly, it appears to be the first moment Bryan realizes these things can actually die, which tells us he’s probably already had a pretty rough encounter with one of the newly undead before this sequence.
