After getting the boot, Buddy continued the party outside Universal property, popping up on street corners and pedestrian bridges with signs reading “Security Kicked Me Out!” and “Honk if u <3 Buddy.”
It’s another hilarious piece of promotion for a truly independent horror comedy that has become one of the surprise theatrical success stories of the summer.
Buddy opened last weekend to $5.5 million domestically, more than doubling its pre-release projections and scoring the biggest opening in Saban Films’ history. The film has already climbed to nearly $8 million domestically as it heads into its second weekend.
And apparently even Barney himself is rooting for the competition. As Dread Central reported earlier this week, former Barney voice actor Dean Wendt saw Buddy and loved it, praising the nostalgic production design and Keegan-Michael Key’s performance as the murderous unicorn.
Buddy comes from Casper Kelly, creator of the viral Too Many Cooks and director of the wonderfully bizarre V/H/S/Halloween segment “Fun Size.” Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Delaney Quinn, Topher Grace (Predators), Michael Shannon (Bug), and Patton Oswalt (Blade: Trinity) star, with Key (Key & Peele) providing the voice of Buddy.
If you want a truly bizarre piece of analog horror that digs directly into your nostalgic sweet tooth, Buddy is now playing in theaters.
Just don’t expect to see him at Halloween Horror Nights.
