Neon’s Hope has now expanded into theaters nationwide, and the distributor has supplied us with a handful of officially approved images showing off its alien monsters and some of the carnage they leave behind.
Unfortunately, I think Neon had to reveal a little too much to sell this thing. We’ve already gotten a few glimpses of the creatures, although the context of what you’re looking at changes considerably as the movie progresses. Seeing a monster in a photo doesn’t tell you everything this movie has in store.
The new images include close-up effects shots of the bloody aftermath of these encounters. If you’d rather experience all of that for the first time in a theater, I’d save the gallery for afterward.
And you should absolutely see this in a theater. I thought Hope was spectacular, a massive sci-fi action epic that brought back a sense of awe I’ve been missing from movies. Find the biggest screen and loudest sound you can.
Matt Konopka was also taken with it in his review here on Dread Central, comparing the film to “Mad Max: Fury Road with monsters.” While he had issues with the creature CG and abrupt ending, he praised its exhilarating action and practical effects, calling it a throwback to the blockbuster monster movies of the ’90s.
Written and directed by Na Hong-jin (The Wailing, The Chaser), Hope follows a small community in South Korea whose investigation into a mutilated animal becomes a desperate fight for survival against creatures they’re completely unprepared to confront.
Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing) stars as police chief Bum-seok, alongside Zo In-sung (Smugglers) as local hunter Sung-ki and Hoyeon (Squid Game) as officer Sung-ae. The cast also includes Michael Fassbender (Prometheus), Alicia Vikander (), () and ().
