Universal Studios Japan’s First 18+ Haunted House Requires Guests to Sign a Waiver

Universal Studios Japan has opened its most extreme horror attraction ever, and this one is strictly for adults.

Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation, titled Zanzō in Japan, is the first R-18 attraction in the 15-year history of Universal Studios Japan’s Halloween Horror Nights. Guests must be at least 18 years old, purchase a separate ticket, and sign a waiver before they’re allowed inside.

The experience places guests inside a facility dedicated to studying nightmares. From there, they’re subjected to isolation, confinement, and increasingly brutal psychological terror as the boundaries between hallucination and reality begin to dissolve.

Unlike a traditional haunted house built around a nonstop barrage of monsters and jump scares, Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation appears designed to get inside your head. Guests are separated and placed inside private rooms, leaving them alone in the darkness as the nightmare gradually closes in around them.

Universal’s official press-preview release describes the attraction as an exploration of the psychological fear created under extreme conditions. Preview guests specifically praised the feeling of being trapped inside a dark room with the terror uncomfortably close, along with the anxiety of having no idea what would happen next—or how long it would continue.

The attraction is so intense that guests are prohibited from carrying bags or other personal belongings inside. More interestingly, Universal Studios Japan explicitly forbids visitors from revealing or sharing details about what happens within the experience through social media, websites, conversations, or any other means. Violators may be asked to delete their posts or leave the park.

Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation is located at Stage 18 and operates from 10 a.m. until the park closes through November 8. Separate timed admission is required, with tickets beginning at ¥1,900 including tax and available only while supplies last.
