‘Happy Death Day 3’: Jessica Rothe Says She and Christopher Landon Have Worked Out the Whole Story

We’ve been waiting years for Happy Death Day 3, and star Jessica Rothe has offered yet another update on Tree Gelbman’s unfinished business. This time, she’s revealing how she personally helped Christopher Landon work out the third movie.

Speaking at Deadline’s TIFF Studio while promoting Joshua Giuliano’s River, Rothe said the two sat down together and mapped out the story. Now they need Universal and Blumhouse to fund it.

“So, Chris Landon and I have actually broken the whole story, which was really fun,” she said. “We went to an undisclosed location—a Le Pain Quotidien in between our houses—and sat there for hours and broke the third movie. And now, we’re just waiting for Universal and Blumhouse to [give us] just a little money.”

If this sounds familiar, we’ve absolutely been here before. But there is a detail worth pulling out.

Back in March, we reported Rothe’s comments to Screen Rant that Landon already had the third installment figured out, with logistics standing in the way. She remained determined to finish Tree’s story, however long it took.

Then, in May’s update here on Dread Central, Rothe revealed that she and Landon were committing to developing the project further. Speaking with ComingSoon, she explained that they wanted to get it into shape to convince the studio, praising Landon’s planned conclusion to the trilogy.

Now she’s describing the work they’ve actually done together. Rothe has gone from championing Landon’s idea to sitting across from him and helping work through the whole story.

That’s what makes this update encouraging. The actress who brought Tree to life is actively helping shape where she goes next. After all this waiting, I love that they’re still finding time to sit down and fight for this movie.
