Puppets, monsters, and a whole lot of blood and guts. Sounds like a good time at Fantastic Fest.
Dread Central is exclusively debuting a clip from Kylgor in the Grisly Abyss, a fantasy-horror adventure celebrating its world premiere at this year’s festival. Our sneak peek finds one of the film’s warriors coming into contact with a succubus, just one of the threats lurking in its monstrous underworld.
Written and directed by Mason Jeffrey Newton-DeRushie, the film follows Kylgor and his fellow champions as they set out to behead the evil King Kath. They actually pull it off, but escaping proves considerably more complicated.
Fleeing the king’s guards, the warriors tumble into a mystical cavern alongside their pursuers. Suddenly, these enemies have to work together to survive ravenous creatures, deceptive hallucinations, and dark magic that threatens to corrupt their flesh. Or, in this case, their foam rubber.
Fantastic Fest’s Kev Dooley describes a film packed with puppetry, stop-motion animation, illustrations, and gruesome practical carnage, drawing connections to barbarian adventures, airbrushed conversion vans, and those childhood fantasy movies that were probably a little too disturbing for their intended audience.
The cast includes Timothy Paul McCarthy (Psycho Goreman), Ry Barrett (In a Violent Nature), and Jason David Brown (Septic Man).
