What’s Next for ‘Spawn’ and ‘Diablo: Immortal’?
We talk to Todd McFarlane about Spawn’s inclusion in the ‘Diablo’ universe with ‘Diablo Immortal’ and what the future holds.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Todd McFarlane (Creator of Spawn and co-creator of Venom) and Emil Salim (Associate Art Director of Diablo Immortal) the other day. The reason? The anti-hero Spawn will be joining Diablo Immortal. I had a few questions for Todd and Emil about how Spawn would fit into the Diablo universe.
“In all honesty, it wasn’t much of a stretch. Come on. I mean, what are you talking about? If you just take half a step back, you go, ‘Todd, you’ve been dealing with heaven and hell themes, lots of hell stuff for decades. Let’s see, Diablo, what are they known for? Okay, hell stuff. All right, fine.’ So it wasn’t like I was trying to wedge him into the world of Shrek or something like that. It was hell on hell.”
I also asked Emil about how they were able to take such different IPs aesthetically and make them fit together. “We don’t want to change the design so much that it’s no longer viewed as Spawn… it is also important for us to give our players something that is familiar, but at the same time it’s new.”
Todd added, “I think the character is sort of built for that because in the mythology, there are all these hell spawns throughout time, so there’s been different looks.”
So it looks like we are going to get a new version of Spawn, crafted for Diablo Immortal. We will see how he looks, plays, and feels on September 29th, 2026.
And I slipped in another question, asking if we would see Spawn make an appearance in any other Diablo titles, like Diablo 4, or the recently announced Diablo 5. Emil told me, “I don’t think we can comment on that too much. I would say for the Diablo franchise overall, whenever we think about collaborations, we go where our players leads us. We’re always listening to our players.”
Todd left me with one final comment regarding Spawn’s Diablo Immortal appearance: “I promise all my comic book fans that even if you’re not a fan or a video game fan, you should curiously look at it because I think it will put a smile on your face.” And honestly, “hell on hell” is probably the best way to describe this collaboration. I can’t wait
