‘Silent Hill’ Film Project Has ‘Resident Evil’ Producer Roy Lee Behind It!

We recently reported exclusively that the Silent Hill film series was gearing up for a fresh start. Now, we have another reason to get excited.

A new Wall Street Journal profile of Roy Lee identifies Silent Hill among his upcoming video game adaptations.

Yes, the producer behind Resident Evil is involved. And after that movie’s $108.3 million worldwide opening, that’s a hell of a name to have attached.

The profile also explains how Resident Evil happened: while making Barbarian, Lee asked Zach Cregger which game he wanted to adapt. Cregger chose Resident Evil. Lee secured the rights, assembled the project, and sold it to Sony following studio competition.

That’s what gets me excited here. A filmmaker had a specific movie he wanted to make, and a producer went out and helped make it happen. If Silent Hill gets that same combination of passion, resources, and confidence in a filmmaker’s vision, we could be looking at something pretty spectacular.

Lee’s horror credits include The Ring, The Grudge, and It. He also runs the horror-focused Spooky Pictures alongside Steven Schneider.

Silent Hill began in 1999 as a survival-horror game for the original PlayStation, developed by Konami’s Team Silent. It follows Harry Mason searching for his missing daughter in a fog-covered town with an occult history. Exploration, puzzles, dangerous creatures, and shifts into a nightmarish Otherworld became recurring elements, with later installments introducing different protagonists and settings.
