Robert Eggers Has His Next Film Lined up…and It’s Not at All What You’d Expect
Robert Eggers has his next film lined up, and I, for one, cannot say I saw this coming. Read on to learn what the director is tackling next.
As excited as I am for Werwulf (pictured above), I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not as high on Robert Eggers as most. Too often, I find his films a little cold and detached for my taste. That approach makes his next movie especially fascinating, as THR reports that the filmmaker will adapt Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet for Focus Features.
No, you didn’t misread that. Eggers isn’t tackling another classic movie monster. Unless you consider love a monster, which, sure, why not.
Though the story is far from horror, it does happen to feature a whole lot of ye olde English. Considering Eggers penchant for that type of dialogue, the fit makes sense. Not to mention, Romeo and Juliet does contain its bloody moments, so expect the filmmaker to lean into those.
Penned in the 1590s, Shakespeare’s play tells the story of Romeo and Juliet, the son and daughter of rival families, the Capulets and the Montagues. After they fall in love, tragedy ensues.
The story has been adapted countless times, most notably perhaps by Baz Luhrmann in 1996.
If you’re sitting here baffled, well, I’m with you. Not in a million years would I have expected this to be Eggers next project. But, for now, that’s the reality we live in. So, if you’re a fan of his horror, here’s hoping the filmmaker injects a good dose of it into his Romeo and Juliet take.
In the meantime, I remain howling in anticipation for Werwulf.
Set in 13th-century England, Werwulf follows a community terrorized by a mysterious creature as folklore begins to manifest into reality. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, Ralph Ineson, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach, reuniting Eggers with several frequent collaborators following Nosferatu.
Focus Features will unleash Werwulf exclusively in theaters this Christmas.
