Sony Wins TIFF Bidding War for Michelle Yeoh’s ‘The Surgeon’

Sony Pictures has acquired The Surgeon, the Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) thriller that sparked the competitive TIFF bidding situation Dread Central exclusively reported last week.

The closed deal covers North America, Latin America, Italy, China, and Hong Kong. We’re told Searchlight Pictures was among the other major bidders, but Sony ultimately came out on top.

Written and directed by Roshan Sethi (A Nice Indian Boy), The Surgeon follows a retired doctor forced back into the operating room at gunpoint. Unfortunately for her captors, she knows exactly how to use human anatomy against them. Martin Freeman (Ghost Stories) also stars, with John Wick producer Basil Iwanyk among the producers.

Meanwhile, we’re hearing negotiations continue on another title from our original report: Everybody Wants to F*ck Me.

The Taron Egerton (Carry-On) comedy-thriller follows a man whose newfound universal desirability becomes a nightmare. We’re told several buyers remain interested, although the bidding hasn’t reached the same intensity as The Surgeon.

Dread Central’s Seth Fox gave it 4.5 stars in his TIFF review, praising its mix of comedy and increasingly frightening situations.
