For the first time in the franchise’s history, a Godzilla movie has received an R rating from the MPA.
Godzilla Minus Zero has officially been rated R for “some violent content/bloody images,” marking a first for the series that began with the original Godzilla in 1954.
Takashi Yamazaki returns to direct the follow-up to Godzilla Minus One, with GKIDS releasing the film in North American theaters November 6, 2026, following its Japanese debut on November 3.
Set in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, the sequel continues the Shikishima family’s story as Japan’s recovery is interrupted by another catastrophic threat. As the latest trailer makes clear, Godzilla wasn’t completely destroyed.
The original film’s combination of human drama and monstrous destruction proved enormously effective. An R rating certainly gives us another reason to wonder just how nasty this next encounter is going to get.
New additions to the cast include Masami Nagasawa (Shin Ultraman) as a weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau and Jun Kunimura (The Wailing) as Dr. Ogata.
Godzilla Minus Zero is also the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX, with imagery and sound designed for the format. Between that and the rating, this sounds like an especially good time to find the biggest screen available.
