Getting swallowed by a whale won’t require an R rating.
Whalefall, the upcoming survival thriller directed by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You), has officially received a PG-13 rating for “peril, violent content, bloody images, some strong language, and thematic content.”
20th Century Studios releases the film in theaters on October 16, 2026.
Based on Daniel Kraus’ novel, Whalefall stars Austin Abrams (Weapons, Resident Evil) as Jay Gardiner, a young man who dives off California’s central coast to search for his late father’s remains. Instead, he’s swallowed by a massive sperm whale.
Trapped inside the animal with only an hour of oxygen remaining, Jay must draw on the lessons his father taught him to find a way out. Josh Brolin (Dune) plays his father.
Duffield co-wrote the screenplay with Kraus. The cast also includes Elisabeth Shue (Piranha 3D), John Ortiz (American Fiction), Jane Levy (Evil Dead), and Emily Rudd (Fear Street).
