‘Crystal Lake’ Creator Claps Back at Fan Theories Regarding Jason’s Origins: “It’s Grounded In Reality”
‘Crystal Lake’ creator Brad Caleb Kane has seen the fan theories regarding Jason Voorhees, and he isn’t happy about it.
Brad Caleb Kane, creator of the Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, is facing some backlash. Nothing severe, mind you, but fans are concerned that the show isn’t going to handle the origins of iconic franchise killer Jason Voorhees very well. And Kane has taken that to heart.
In a recent trailer, a yellow door was spotted that had fans immediately theorizing the Crystal Lake series would explain away Jason as a government experiment, à la Stranger Things. Kane wants to assure us that’s not the case.
Kane spoke to Deadline, where he noted that the prequel does “give certain explanations” about Jason, but doesn’t go as wild with it as some think.
Said Kane, “Listen, it’s hard for me to look at the theories that are bandied about, like, ‘There’s a strange yellow door. Are they making Jason a government super soldier? Is that the route they’re going down?’. And I just want to tell people that my wife said, ‘Don’t engage yet. Just let them have their theories and do their thing.’ But I don’t want people watching, thinking that we’re doing some sort of Stranger Things, Eleven, government super soldier. It’s not that, it’s its own thing.”
Well, okay then.
Added Kane, “It’s grounded in more reality. It’s grounded in things that were going on in the 60s and 70s that sort of intersect with the theme of mistrusting our institutions. I don’t want to say too much more because I don’t want to get into spoiler territory, but I didn’t want people to think that we’re doing Stranger Things. This exists in the world of Friday the 13th, it’s grounded.”
So, Crystal Lake isn’t just a Friday the 13th version of Stranger Things. Got it. Kane has made that abundantly clear.
Still, I think it’s fair for fans to worry about any attempt to explain away Jason. You could argue that the franchise has always worked because we really have no clue what the hockey-masked killer is. I’ve always thought of him as a force of nature enacting the curse of Crystal Lake over and over and over again.
