Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Godzilla movie to receive an R rating from the MPA, and Takashi Yamazaki wasn’t about to sacrifice essential scenes to avoid it.
Speaking to Variety at the sequel’s New York Film Festival premiere, the filmmaker explained that reaching the widest possible audience couldn’t come at the expense of the movie.
“There were certain scenes that, for me as a director, were so essential to the film,” Yamazaki said. “Censoring it or cutting it was just not an option for me.”
As we previously reported, the MPA rated the film R for “some violent content/bloody images,” marking a first for the franchise that began back in 1954.
That certainly adds some weight to the rating. Whatever those scenes involve, Yamazaki considered them important enough to preserve, even with a more restrictive classification on the table.
The follow-up to Godzilla Minus One takes place in 1949, two years after the previous film, continuing the Shikishima family’s story as Japan faces another catastrophic threat.
New cast members include Masami Nagasawa (Shin Ultraman) as a weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau and Jun Kunimura (The Wailing) as Dr. Ogata.
GKIDS releases Godzilla Minus Zero in North American theaters November 6, following its November 3 debut in Japan.
