If you missed Hope in theaters, prepare to turn your living room into a fucking war zone.
NEON’s sci-fi action epic from Na Hong-jin (The Wailing) arrives on Digital HD through Amazon Video and iTunes on October 13.
The film drops us into the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, where a mysterious creature sends the community into chaos. Police and local hunters attempt to track it down, only to discover that they’re the ones being hunted—and that their situation is considerably stranger than anyone understands.
I’ve already written about how much I loved Hope, which brought back a sense of awe I’ve been missing from big-screen spectacle. It’s enormous, ridiculous, funny, and absolutely relentless. That linked piece gets into major spoilers, so save it until afterward. For now, just know that you should stick around during the credits.
And I’m not alone. Matt Konopka awarded the film 4 out of 5 stars in his Dread Central review, comparing it to “Mad Max: Fury Road with monsters.” While he had reservations about the CGI, character development, and abrupt ending, the scale and creature mayhem more than delivered.
The cast includes Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing), Zo In-sung (Moving), Hoyeon (Squid Game), Michael Fassbender (The Killer), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Taylor Russell (Bones and All), and Cameron Britton (Mindhunter).
There could be more to come, too. In , the filmmaker discussed his plans for a potential follow-up. That conversation also contains spoilers, but the takeaway is simple: he has more story to tell.
