That giant man lurking in the sewer in Resident Evil? A giant fucking puppet.
Director Zach Cregger revealed in an interview with Collider that the creature, prominently featured in the trailer with something moving inside its stomach, was a massive practical creation requiring multiple puppeteers.
“That’s a giant 2,000-pound puppet, took four people to operate that guy,” Cregger explained.
And while the scene combines practical and digital effects, the creature itself was physically there.
“Obviously the rats are digital, but the man and the breathing and all that, that’s real. There’s no digital anything going on there.”
Star Austin Abrams chimed in to mention the mechanism inside the creature’s stomach, with Cregger confirming that the team could move it around.
The monster came courtesy of Legacy Effects, with Cregger singling out effects veteran Shane Mahan and his work on The Terminator and Aliens.
“The guy’s amazing, and so to have someone like that putting their brainpower on this was amazing.”
This is the kind of behind-the-scenes stuff I love. There’s something pretty incredible about finding out that a grotesque creature you might have assumed was digital was actually an enormous puppet, breathing and moving right there in front of the actor. And to have it created by Legacy Effects? Holy shit.
