For horror fans, it’s a cult classic we love and celebrate. Outside that circle, I suspect plenty of people have no idea what the hell it is. If your recent horror viewing has been more Obsession and Backrooms, there’s a very different kind of nightmare waiting here.
Directed by Bigelow and co-written with Eric Red, the original Near Dark follows Caleb, a young man whose attraction to a mysterious woman named Mae draws him into a roaming family of vampires. His relationship with her forces him into their violent existence while his human family searches for him.
Think dusty roads, outlaw vampires, and a love story caught in the middle.
Adrian Pasdar (Heroes) plays Caleb opposite Jenny Wright (I, Madman) as Mae. The cast also includes Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, and Jenette Goldstein, all of whom appeared in Aliens, along with Joshua John Miller (River’s Edge) and Tim Thomerson (Trancers).
This also isn’t the first attempt to revisit Near Dark.
As Dread Central reported in 2006, Platinum Dunes and Rogue Pictures were developing a feature remake with Samuel Bayer attached to direct. Bayer would eventually direct the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, but his Near Dark never materialized.
By December 2008, producer Brad Fuller was telling Empire that the project had stalled over concerns about its similarities to Twilight.
“Near Dark is probably not going to happen,” Fuller told the magazine. “For now, that movie is on hold.”
Now A24 is taking a shot at bringing Near Dark to television, and I like seeing the company branch out this way. There’s room for original horror and fresh takes on older films, especially one that so many people still haven’t discovered. Hopefully, Crystal Lake finds its audience and helps build momentum for projects like this. Near Dark is still in development, but I’m glad A24 is giving it a shot.
