Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends, Silent Night, Deadly Night) is heading into troubled waters in Below, and Netflix’s latest batch of images gives us a look at his role in the upcoming sea monster series.
Horror fans were thirsting over Campbell’s Corey Cunningham in Halloween Ends, and he’s become a fan favorite as Billy Chapman in the new cult classic Silent Night, Deadly Night. Now he’s trading slashers for a sea monster, playing Jay Penney alongside Josh Hartnett (30 Days of Night, The Faculty) in the six-episode limited series arriving in full on October 8.
Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a Newfoundland fisherman fighting to protect his loved ones and preserve his disappearing livelihood as a mysterious sea creature terrorizes the local community. With his son Wade, played by Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), in danger, Calvin teams up with marine researcher Fonda, played by Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil, The Turning), to investigate what’s lurking beneath the waves and uncover their island’s hidden history.
The previously released trailer gave us plenty of close-ups of Hartnett’s intensely concerned face, alongside glimpses of the creature wreaking havoc. It kept the monster itself elusive, although we learned that it came from a melting iceberg. Encino Man style.
There were hints of supernatural occurrences, too, and the montage of increasingly chaotic footage made this look like it could be a fun little limited series.
Dread Central’s Matt Konopka reviewed the first two episodes at TIFF, praising the cast, atmosphere, and surprising gore while noting that the opening initially follows familiar sea monster conventions. As he wrote in his TIFF review, “Below had me hooked by the time the second episode finished.”
