The first clip from Mike Flanagan’s Carrie has arrived courtesy of IGN, and it gives us a great taste of the coming-of-age story behind this new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.
In the clip, Carrie, played by Summer H. Howell (Curse of Chucky), storms away from her mother, Margaret, played by Samantha Sloyan (Hush), using her powers to slam the door shut. Then comes the realization of just how much power she holds. That little smile suggests she’s no longer afraid of the person who has controlled her life.
I think a lot of us can connect with that on some level. That moment when you’re young and feel limitless, when you finally say no to an authority figure and realize they can’t control everything you do. There’s something exciting about seeing Carrie experience that feeling, especially knowing how much of her story is built around people making her feel powerless. It’s a great first clip.
As we previously reported, the series follows Carrie into public high school after her father’s death ends a lifetime of isolation. Bullying, social media, and her emerging telekinetic abilities complicate her attempt to find a place among her classmates.
Dread Central’s Daniel Kurland scored the entire series 4 out of 5 in his season review, praising its exploration of modern adolescence and the way it sustains an eight-episode story. While he doesn’t place it above Brian De Palma’s original film, he calls it “an extremely rewarding update of King’s debut novel.”
Watch Carrie discover the satisfaction of slamming a door without touching it below and view all eight episodes when they premiere October 7 on Prime Video.
