NECA is bringing back the classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning set for the film’s 20th anniversary, with preorders opening tomorrow, October 6. The first promotional image is below, and it’s giving me another excuse to talk about how much I love the Platinum Dunes movies.
Some of you older readers will probably remember that I went to war with the horror community over Platinum Dunes. The truth is, I really like a lot of their remakes.
Weirdly, I’m not a fan of the Friday the 13th remake, which everyone seems to love, and the A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot is a fucking disaster. But if you had read the script, you’d see there was actually a really, really cool story that did not end up onscreen.
I digress.
Their Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake is visceral, brutal, white-knuckle, punch-to-the-gut horror. Uncomfortable, gnarly, violent. All the things.
You know when you go through a haunted house and they spray you with stink and smells and shit to bring you into the environment? That’s what this movie feels like. Everything is so filthy and oppressive that you can practically smell it. Nothing felt more authentic to me than Platinum Dunes’ Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I still think it’s one of the best remakes of all time. Maybe one of the best horror movies of all time. It deserves to be up there. It’s fucking amazing.
And honestly, the second one is great, too. Jonathan Liebesman gets a bad rap, but The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is a fucking great follow-up. A prequel, technically, but you know what I mean.
I also love Leatherface’s design in both films. He looks amazing, and Andrew Bryniarski (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) did an incredible job bringing him to life. There’s so much physical menace in that version of the character.
Anyways, all of this rambling is really just to tell you that NECA is bringing him back.
“In honor of the 20th anniversary of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, we are bringing back a classic set to slaughter your shelves!” the company announced.
