Blair has shared the memory before. Dread Central’s 2012 coverage of her appearance at Chicago’s Flashback Weekend includes a similar account of asking Friedkin about the levitation and head rotation. It’s still pretty wonderful hearing her tell it.
And more than 50 years later, The Exorcist is still the scariest movie ever made. As far as I’m concerned, that argument is over.
Released in 1973, Friedkin’s adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s novel became a cultural phenomenon, accompanied by reports of audience members fainting and vomiting. It wasn’t the first movie to shock the public—Psycho had certainly done its part—but the reaction to The Exorcist went well beyond ordinary movie buzz.
Now Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House) is taking his own stab at the property, with his new Exorcist movie scheduled for March 12, 2027.
For me, nobody’s really cracked how to follow that original movie, although the television series was pretty wonderful. I’m curious to see what Flanagan brings to it. That’s a hell of a film to live up to.
