Adam Wingard’s Onslaught is now available to rent or own on digital from A24, giving the action-horror movie another chance to find its audience after a disappointing theatrical run.
Unfortunately, Onslaught brought in just $3.3 million domestically, with its reported worldwide total sitting at approximately $3.4 million. That sucks. When movies like this don’t find an audience, I worry it gets harder to make more of them.
Reuniting Wingard with longtime collaborator Simon Barrett, Onslaught has shades of so many of the ’80s action and horror movies they grew up loving. As I noted when the trailer dropped, it looks like Wolfenstein, The Terminator, and Friday the 13th smashed together into absolute mayhem. It’s very much a spiritual follow-up to The Guest, with a badass heroine, genetically engineered super soldiers, and plenty of bloody carnage.
Adria Arjona plays an Army sniper forced to protect her young daughter when those soldiers break loose in the desert. The cast also includes Dan Stevens (The Guest), Rebecca Hall (The Night House), Michael Biehn (Aliens), and Reginald VelJohnson (Die Hard).
Our own Matt Konopka was mixed but ultimately positive in his three-star review, praising the atmosphere, gore, and John Carpenter influences while taking issue with the pacing and the competing demands of its action and slasher elements.
