Composer Marco Beltrami Has Some Words About ‘Scream 4’; Teases Return for Part 8

Cover your ears, Scream 4 fans, because franchise composer Marco Beltrami has some words about your favorite sequel that you may not like to hear.

The brilliant Scream scorer recently sat down with Deadline to discuss his involvement in the franchise. It’s a great interview if you’re curious about the thought process behind each character’s themes and Beltrami’s non-existent background with horror before he got the job.

During the interview, Beltrami was asked about Scream 4…a film it’s pretty obvious he didn’t enjoy working on. Said Beltrami, “I have to be honest. It was not a project I wanted to do. In fact, I’m not even sure Wes really wanted to do it. Like it was something that Dimension was really forcing, and I wasn’t really writing music for Wes then. It was like I was writing these cues, and they would be approved by some clown in an office in New York. And even though the franchise had done really well, they had no budget for orchestral instruments.“

Ouch. Tell us how you really feel, Marco.

Continued Beltrami, “We had to do some little quick session in Eastern Europe. The whole thing was, I have to say, uninspired. I think the movie, of all the first four, is the weakest, and musically too, it’s the most uninspired. It’s a shame, but it’s the reality.“

While I do love Scream 4, I have to agree with Beltrami when it comes to the score and other elements like that awful lighting.
