We previously told you something was happening with Megan Is Missing. Now, Michael Goi is teasing an announcement tomorrow, October 8… and there’s an interesting detail tucked into his post.
The writer-director shared a TikTok looking back at his notorious found footage film, promising that the story isn’t finished. But what caught my eye? He tagged Lionsgate.
Are we getting a new movie? A series? There’s already a pretty good reason to suspect the latter.
As Dread Central reported in March, IATSE revealed that Goi had filmed a vertical-format Megan Is Missing series in Los Angeles. At the time, there were no announced details about its cast, story, platform, or distributor. Tomorrow’s reveal could finally explain what he’s been working on.
The Lionsgate tag makes me wonder if the company will be involved in releasing it, although that remains speculation. Lionsgate already has a connection to the original, having released it on Blu-ray in 2021. A tag alone doesn’t confirm a new partnership.
The original follows a teenage girl’s disappearance after connecting with someone online, with her best friend trying to find out what happened. Released in 2011, it found a whole new audience when it went viral on TikTok in 2020, introducing unsuspecting viewers to its particularly brutal brand of horror.
Goi’s anniversary tease appears to be counting from the film’s production rather than its release: Megan Is Missing was shot in 2006, making this year 20 years since filming.
The footage in the post appears to revisit the original, with a girl recording herself on a bed and explaining that she hasn’t heard from Megan in four days. For now, the announcement is the tease. We’ll find out tomorrow what Goi has planned.
