It also doesn’t confirm whether Hideaki Anno or Shinji Higuchi, who directed the original, would return. Hamabe and Emoto both appeared in Anno’s Shin Kamen Rider, which the outlet notes, but those relationships don’t establish who’s directing this reported sequel.
And all of this is a great reminder to revisit Shin Godzilla.
Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One was so spectacular that it almost made me forget how completely blown away I was by Shin Godzilla before it. Minus One went on to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, bringing an entirely new level of recognition to the franchise.
But Shin Godzilla was already doing something phenomenal. Its social commentary was unreal: a monster tearing through Japan while officials struggled through meetings, procedure, and the question of who was actually allowed to do anything about it. The bureaucracy became part of the nightmare. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I remember being absolutely floored by how timely it felt, and by the effects bringing that grotesque version of Godzilla to life.
It originally received a limited U.S. theatrical release before returning to North American theaters through GKIDS in 4K in 2025. It didn’t initially get the same kind of theatrical moment here that Minus One eventually enjoyed.
A sequel could finally pick up on that deeply unsettling final image, although this report offers no plot details or release date.
For now, I’m excited by the possibility of returning to that world. And if Hamabe really is involved, the first thing I want to know is who the hell she’s playing.
