Mike Flanagan’sCarrie has arrived, with all eight episodes now streaming onPrime Video. There goes the rest of my week.
I haven’t finished the season yet, but the first few episodes are phenomenal. Flanagan’s take on Stephen King’s novel feels timely and authentic to how kids interact today, and its modern coming-of-age approach gives this familiar story a very different feel. It doesn’t feel like it’s treading on Brian De Palma’s original movie, which is a masterpiece. It gives me something new to connect with.
And Summer H. Howell (Curse of Chucky) is just mesmerizing. She’s an incredible young actress, and watching her play off Samantha Sloyan (Hush) as Carrie’s mother, Margaret, has been everything for me so far.
The series follows Carrie White into public high school after her father’s death ends a lifetime of isolation under her mother’s control. As she tries to find her place, bullying and social media collide with the awakening of her telekinetic abilities. Flanagan serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, and directs four episodes.
For a verdict on the entire season, Dread Central’s Daniel Kurland scored the series 4 out of 5 in his review, praising its performances, exploration of adolescence, and ability to sustain the story across eight episodes. While he doesn’t rank it above De Palma’s film, he calls it “an extremely rewarding update of King’s debut novel.”
That’s encouraging, because I can’t wait to dive back in and see how everything comes together.
