BREAKING: During Blumfest at NYCC, it was just revealed that Craig Zobel (Compliance, The Hunt) will direct the feature adaptation of Boom! Studios’ horror comic series, Something Is Killing the Children!
Created by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera, Something Is Killing the Children debuted in 2019 and quickly became one of the biggest horror comics of the modern era.
Stephen Christy and James Tynion IV will produce the film for BOOM! Studios/Penguin Random House. Jason Blum will produce for Blumhouse with Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers. Adam Yoelin and Mette Norkjaer will also executive produce. Series co-creator Werther Dell’Edera will act as co-producer.
The story follows Erica Slaughter, a mysterious monster hunter who travels from town to town investigating disappearances that local authorities can’t explain. The terrifying twist is that the monsters are real—but only children can truly see them. Adults either can’t perceive the creatures or refuse to believe they exist until it’s far too late.
As the series has evolved, it’s expanded far beyond its original premise, exploring the secretive House of Slaughter, the Order of St. George, Erica’s past, and the mythology behind the monsters themselves.
Despite nearing issue #50, there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight. BOOM! Studios has previously committed to at least 100 issues, meaning Erica Slaughter’s story is still only around the halfway point.
Now, we’ll soon see Erica’s story on the big screen with a director officially attached to the live-action feature.
And for those concerned that Blumhouse won’t go as hard with the film as the comics suggest, don’t worry.
Zobel described the script as containing “firehoses of blood“, while Tynion added, “we rip a kid in half in the first issue…I promise you, there are kids who die in the script“.
So, yes, there will be blood. Lots of it. But if you’re not comfortable with seeing kids die in horror, well, you may want to skip the movie called.
