Watch Austin Abrams come eye-to-eye with an enormous whale while fighting off a squid that’s in the middle of becoming the whale’s next meal.
That might be the most convoluted sentence I’ve ever written, and yet it all comes together in this thrilling new clip from Whalefall, opening in theaters this Friday, October 16.
Abrams is caught in the middle of an underwater feeding frenzy, and the sheer scale of the animal looming in front of him is terrifying. Surviving the squid is one problem. Surviving what’s about to swallow both of them is another entirely.

Abrams is having quite the run. Between Weapons, Resident Evil, and now Whalefall, he’s quickly become one of the most exciting faces in horror. This time, he’s carrying a survival thriller that puts him at the center of an almost impossibly horrible situation.
Based on Daniel Kraus’ novel, the film follows Jay Gardiner, a young man diving off California’s central coast to search for his late father’s remains. Instead, he’s swallowed by a sperm whale, leaving him trapped inside with just one hour of oxygen. The lessons his father taught him might be the only thing that gets him out.
We recently shared another clip that digs into that troubled father-son relationship, with Josh Brolin playing Jay’s dad.
As for the weekend ahead, I think Whalefall has a clear shot at number one. Other Mommy opened to an estimated $27.5 million, but that brutal D+ CinemaScore has me expecting a massive second-weekend drop. An 80% plunge… or worse – wouldn’t surprise me.
