The Ghoulies revival has cleared a legal hurdle. In an exclusive report for Brain Mutant, they uncovered a lawsuit involving franchise co-creator Jefery Levy, who confirmed that the dispute has been settled.
According to the outlet’s examination of federal court filings, screenwriter Theo Lemasters filed the lawsuit against Levy in late 2025. A settlement was reached earlier this month, and the case was dismissed October 6.
Levy also explained to Brain Mutant how the legal situation had held up the planned reboot:
“We have an incredible reboot script. Cannot get financing until the legal issue is settled. Once the legal issue is settled, we will begin production on Ghoulies 2027.”
That’s an encouraging update, although it shouldn’t be mistaken for a confirmed production start or release date. Financing remains the next step, according to Brain Mutant’s report.
Directed by Luca Bercovici, who co-wrote it with Levy, the original Ghoulies arrived in 1985 with occult rituals, little demons, and that unforgettable toilet poster. Three sequels followed: Ghoulies II, which moved the creatures into a carnival; Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College; and 1994’s Ghoulies IV.
Our own Anthony Arrigo acknowledged the original’s messy storytelling but noted that it “does possess a charm that isn’t purely nostalgic” in his 4K review. We’ll see whether the little monsters can recapture some of that charm more than three decades after their last movie.
