Poison Ivy could be getting her own television series, with The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc in talks to produce.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and DC are developing the project with HBO as its potential home. LeFranc would produce rather than write, and no writers or lead actor are currently attached.
One important distinction: Deadline reports that the series would not be part of Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, despite LeFranc’s involvement in The Penguin. That doesn’t establish where it would fit elsewhere in DC’s screen continuity, and the project has not been picked up.
Created by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino, Poison Ivy is botanist Pamela Isley, whose abilities include manipulating plant life and influencing people through pheromones. Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) famously played her in Batman & Robin, while Lake Bell (The Night House) voices her in the animated Harley Quinn.
And honestly, she’s a wonderful choice for a series. Initially introduced as a supervillain, Ivy has grown into a much more complicated and sympathetic antihero. Even Absolute Batman gives her a devastating origin that makes you empathize with her, while Harley Quinn explores her relationship with Harley as the two create chaos in Gotham. There’s a whole lot of personality, tragedy, and history to work with here.
For now, it’s early days, but pairing that character with a producer who helped make The Penguin work is certainly an exciting possibility.
