Curry Barker would love to release a version of Obsession with roughly 20 more minutes of footage. But he’s also making something clear: the movie that hit theaters is already his director’s cut.
Dread Central previously reported on the heavy lifting behind the scenes that helped turn Barker’s smash hit into what I consider a modern horror masterpiece. Different edits, additional photography, alternate endings, and a whole lot of work went into shaping the film that arrived in theaters this past spring.
Not all movies are born perfect. It takes an entire community to turn something promising into something special, and that process can leave behind different takes, different scenes, and unseen footage that horror fans should be clamoring to see.
I certainly want to see it. But wanting more doesn’t mean the movie needs to be fixed, and Barker seems pretty happy with where he landed.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, the filmmaker was asked whether there’s anything he would change about Obsession as its editor.
“I think I’m pretty happy with the cut right now,” Barker explains. “There’s things I would reshoot, but there’s not things I would change with the footage that I have.”
There is, however, another version he’d like fans to see.
“But I would say that there’s a longer version of the movie that I would love to release for sure.”
How much longer?
“Probably like 20 minutes longer.”
Barker makes a point of distinguishing that potential release from a director’s cut.
“I think the movie is the director’s cut. I really do. Like I did whatever I wanted for the most part,” he says. “So that is the director’s cut. But I would say extended cut for sure.”
That’s an important distinction, especially given everything we’ve discussed about the film’s post-production. The existence of other versions doesn’t mean Barker feels the released movie is incomplete. An extended cut would give fans a chance to spend more time with the footage without replacing the version he’s happy with.
