‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Director May Not Be Finished with the Titular Kaiju Just Yet
With ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ stomping into theaters, director Takashi Yamazaki reveals he’d like to do another sequel, if offered.
Godzilla Minus Zero stomps into theaters this week, marking the end of a long journey for director Takashi Yamazaki. But it may not be the end of the filmmaker’s involvement with the titular kaiju.
While speaking with SFX Magazine for the recent issue, Yamazaki was asked about whether or not he would return for another crack at the King of the Monsters. Said the director, “I have been a huge Godzilla fan since I was a small child, and I swung for the fences with Godzilla Minus Zero. [These films] are huge milestones, looking back at my career and in my life so far. But that doesn’t mean I would never work on another Godzilla film again. If Toho came to me with another offer to explore this world even further, I’d probably say yes.“
Continued Yamazaki, “Yet at the same time, if you told me this is my last Godzilla film, I would be quite satisfied with what we were able to achieve. I’m very grateful to Toho for trusting me with their baby. I’m just happy that I was a Godzilla fan, because that’s what enabled me to do this.“
Between Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla Minus Zero, Yamazaki is one of the greatest things to happen for the franchise. Minus One became an Academy Award winner, and I think there’s every possibility that Minus Zero could achieve the same. Both are stunning pieces of Kaiju magnificence, as well as two of the greatest entries in the series by a mile.
