If you missed it in theaters, you’ll soon get to decide where you land on a movie that split our own writers here at Dread Central.
Matt Konopka wasn’t a fan, calling it “a generic funhouse of horrors that’s seldom scary” in his review. He praised the lead performance and some early scares, but felt the film lost its tension as it piled on the supernatural chaos.
Chad Collins offered a different perspective in his Devil’s Advocate piece. While he also didn’t find it scary, he argued that it “works far better as a dark coming-of-age tale than as a conventional horror movie,” finding more to appreciate in its fairy-tale imagery and a child’s growing awareness of her parents’ flaws.
We’ve also shared plenty of looks at how the monster came together. Our creature-effects coverage features makeup artist Jeremy Selenfriend’s photos and footage of the entity’s “attack mode,” performed by Hayley Spelman. The design developed from Vincent Proce’s concept art, using distorted versions of Chastain’s features as its foundation.
You can also watch the BTS featurette, featuring Chastain and the filmmakers discussing the title character. And for more of Chastain’s horror work, Chad’s career retrospective revisits Mama, Crimson Peak and It Chapter Two.
Based on Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, the film follows Bela, a young girl who befriends a disturbing entity that looks uncannily like her mother. But Other Mommy becomes an increasingly manipulative presence, determined to tear her family apart.
Jessica Chastain (Mama, It Chapter Two) stars alongside Arabella Olivia Clark, Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman (Severance), Sean Kaufman (The Summer I Turned Pretty) and Karen Allen. Savage (Host, The Boogeyman) directs from a screenplay by Nathan Elston.
