Dread Central has been provided with two exclusive behind-the-scenes clips from Zach Cregger’s mega hit Resident Evil, and they’re all about the Puker, the acid-spewing zombie that makes Austin Abrams’ already miserable night even worse.
Both clips come from the home release’s Anatomy of a Scene: From Storyboard to Splatter bonus feature. One reveals how Abrams helped change the creature after filming had already begun. The other shows how the crew made an elevator dissolve in real time.
Major spoilers for the film’s final act follow.
As Bryan works his way up the building to deliver an antidote, he encounters the Puker and eventually turns its own weapon against another creature coming up the elevator shaft. Our first clip breaks down how they staged that fight, including the surprisingly awkward business of getting a vomiting monster pointed in the right direction.
Visual effects supervisor Alessandro Ongaro introduces the sequence before Cregger explains how much could still change on set, even with the action planned out beforehand.
“You use storyboards. It doesn’t mean you don’t make changes on the fly. We make changes every day,” Cregger says.
That includes the Puker’s entire outfit.
The creature originally wore a flannel shirt and jeans. They had already filmed a day with that look when Abrams suggested putting it in a hospital gown instead.
“It makes that character so much more interesting. It gives him a story,” Cregger explains. “Some illness he has is what’s manifesting this thing.”
His response? “You’re totally right. Let’s fucking change it.”
The filmmakers digitally altered the clothing in some previously shot footage and added an IV bag to complete the look. It’s such a small suggestion, but suddenly this grotesque thing has a little history attached to it.
EXCLUSIVE: Austin Abrams helped redesign the Puker AFTER filming had begun. Zach Cregger explains the hospital-gown change in this ‘RESIDENT EVIL’ bonus-feature clip. Spoilers ahead. Now on digital; 4K and Blu-ray December 29. https://t.co/8A7mKNbYa2
