A lot of time has passed since World War Z hit theaters in 2013. Politically, things are very different. We’ve also lived through an actual pandemic since then, which changes how you watch a movie about governments and ordinary people responding to a worldwide outbreak. There’s plenty for a sequel to work with.
That’s the interesting bit for me. What does World War Z look like after everything that’s happened since the first movie?
The original was a monster at the box office, pulling in more than $540 million worldwide. Who knows if that audience will turn up again all these years later, but you can understand why Paramount keeps coming back to it.
Directed by Marc Forster and based on Max Brooks’ novel, the film followed Pitt’s Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator traveling the world in search of a way to stop the zombie pandemic.
If you need a refresher, Gerry discovers that the zombies ignore people with serious illnesses. He tests that theory by injecting himself with a pathogen, allowing him to walk past the infected. That discovery gives humanity a form of camouflage and a chance to fight back, while Gerry finally reunites with his family. The ending leaves an entire war still to be fought. So there’s certainly room to continue the story.
