Even Matt Konopka’s more mixed Dread Central review singled out the effects as “excellent, ooey-gooey craftsmanship,” noting the combination of practical makeup and CG enhancement. Whatever your feelings about the rest of the movie, there’s some spectacularly nasty work to appreciate here.
Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake, Speak No Evil), Clayface follows rising actor Matt Hagen, whose career falls apart after a crime boss leaves him disfigured. An experimental treatment restores his appearance, but its side effects send him toward a monstrous transformation and bloody revenge.
Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, and David Dencik also star. Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini wrote the screenplay, with a story by Mike Flanagan. You can see more of the production in the earlier behind-the-scenes featurette we shared.
And with a new Constantine now in development, with Evil Dead Wrath filmmaker Francis Galluppi writing, as we reported last night, I’m hoping Clayface helps keep that door open for more horror within DC. There’s a lot of nasty material to work with.
