The King of the Monsters is embracing his horror roots in a major way.
Publisher IDW Publishing has unveiled an incredible new variant cover for The Horror of Godzilla #1, and horror fans will immediately recognize the inspiration. Variant B, illustrated by Tunica, pays direct homage to John Carpenter‘s seminal 1978 classic Halloween, reimagining one of the most iconic horror movie posters of all time through the lens of Toho’s legendary kaiju.
The cover is part of IDW’s upcoming Kai-Sei Era initiative, a bold new chapter in Godzilla comics that appears determined to emphasize the creature’s terrifying origins rather than his role as a world-saving antihero.
“A terrifying look at Godzilla’s first attack!
“Tokyo, 1954. As the country begins to look toward its postwar future, two scientists start an experiment in the Pacific Ocean. It is meant to change everything…and it will. Come now, reader, and bear witness to the incredible horror of the King of the Monsters. There are no heroes. There are no survivors. There is only the wrath of Godzilla.”
The four-issue standalone miniseries serves as a prequel to the larger Kai-Sei Era continuity while also noting it’s essential reading for fans of Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and the original Godzilla (1954).
The project comes from writers Griffin Sheridan and Ethan S. Parker, known for Marvel Zombies and Kill Your Darlings, with artwork by veteran horror illustrator Tristan Jones, whose previous credits include Event Horizon and Aliens comics.
According to IDW, the series will place readers directly on the ground during Godzilla’s first assault, offering a perspective unlike any previous Godzilla story.
is currently available for preorder with a cover price of $4.99. The issue is scheduled to arrive in comic shops on July 29, 2026.
