With filming underway for ‘The Conjuring: First Communion’, we look back at that time cross-shaped bruises appeared on star Vera Farmiga.
Filming is currently underway on prequel The Conjuring: First Communion. Garrett Wareing (The Long Walk) and Amanda Fix (Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma) star as a young Ed and Lorraine Warren, respectively, taking on the roles made popular by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. With that, we thought we’d look back at a mysterious report from a while back…one in which Farmiga revealed cross-shaped bruises that appeared on her body during the filming of The Conjuring: Last Rites.
Way back in August of 2025, Farmiga joined E! News to discuss the fourth film in The Conjuring franchise. She showed the outlet a photo of cross-shaped bruises that sprouted up while filming, saying, “Yeah, I get battered. That happens every time we do it. It’s just these inexplicable bruising shapes that occur on my body. It just is what it is.”
Credit to Farmiga for taking a fairly casual attitude towards that, because I’d personally be freaking the fuck out.
According to the outlet, the actor has received multiple odd injuries over the course of the franchise.
Added Farmiga, “We don’t like talking about it. We’re caught between a rock and a hard place—sensationalizing this and selling a movie.”
What’s even stranger is that this sort of thing isn’t all that uncommon when it comes to religious horror films. Mysterious happenings surrounding The Omen and The Exorcist have been well documented, with the show Cursed Films exploring both on Shudder.
Now, I’m not a superstitious person, except when it comes to my sports teams (look, if I wear the wrong jersey, they’ll lose, you don’t understand). That said, you do have to wonder if there’s anything supernatural going on with these sets, or if it’s all coincidence. I lean coincidence, but I have to admit…it’s weird.
At this time, it’s unclear whether Patrick Wilson and will reprise their roles as the older versions of Ed and Lorraine Warren in some capacity. Personally, I wouldn’t blame either if they took a pass this time around. One cross-shaped bruise is one too many.
