‘Never After Dark’ Filmmaker Dave Boyle to Direct Reimagining of Japanese Horror Film ‘Pulse’!

BREAKING: Huge news this afternoon, as Deadline reports that Dave Boyle (Never After Dark) is set to direct a reimagining of the Japanese horror film Pulse!

Boyle will take a pass on the script written by Luke Piotrowski (The Night House).

Screen Gems and Spyglass are developing the film, with Parker Finn (Smile) and Jonathan Fass set to produce for Bad Feeling.

Unleashed in 2001 by filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the original Pulse follows people who begin to suspect that the dead may be trying to invade the world of the living through the internet.

It’s an incredibly eerie film that was way ahead of its time and is one of my personal favorite J-horror flicks.

To this day, it remains widely regarded as a beloved J-horror movie. So much so that Hollywood jumped on the bandwagon back in 2006 for an awful remake starring Kristen Bell. That was back when the States were adapting every J-horror film they could get their hands on thanks to the success of The Ring.

Pulse has influenced countless horror films since then. That includes recent hit Obsession. Check out our video on IG explaining the connection between the two.

Via the outlet, plot details for the new take are being kept under wraps. All that’s known is that it’s set in the modern era and will revolve around a new set of characters.

The news comes after Boyle’s chilling ghost story, Never After Dark, has received heaps of praise ahead of its upcoming release in theaters. For starters, it won the Midnighter Audience Award during its premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. Stephen King even called it “amazing”.

Based on everything we’ve heard about his upcoming haunter, Boyle sounds like an excellent choice to take another crack at . Granted, I don’t think you can improve on the original–it’s a masterpiece of horror–but I’m willing to give Boyle a chance.
