Rob Savage Promises ‘Other Mommy’ Has About 50 Jump Scares; New Images!

We’ve already been pretty fucking high on Other Mommy around here, and a batch of new images from the film aren’t doing anything to temper that excitement.

Entertainment Weekly just premiered several new looks at director Rob Savage’s (The Boogeyman, Dashcam) adaptation of Josh Malerman’s Incidents Around the House, which arrives in theaters just in time for Halloween.

And apparently, Savage plans to scare the living shit out of us.

Asked by EW how many jump scares he’s packed into Other Mommy, Savage offered a pretty ridiculous number.

“Oh, like 50,” Savage said with a smirk. “It depends on what you refer to as a jump scare.”

Savage also came to the defense of the much-maligned horror staple, explaining that a great jump scare doesn’t necessarily require the familiar quiet…quiet…LOUD formula.

“Jump scares get s— on a lot,” he told the mag. “And I think crafting a really great jump scare can sometimes happen without the kind of quiet…quiet…loud sting that everyone associates with jump scares.”

Savage says the movie “plays the hits of every aspect of horror,” mixing dread and big set pieces with a paranoia that leaves both Bela and the audience questioning whether they’re actually looking at her mother, Ursula, or the sinister Other Mommy.

And the movie apparently wastes absolutely no time getting started.

Savage revealed that the opening scene comes directly from the first page of Malerman’s novel. Bela’s parents put her to bed, turn off the light, and leave after she says goodnight.

Then, alone in the darkness, Bela whispers:

“Goodnight, Other Mommy.”

“Immediately, hairs on the back of the neck,” Savage said.
